Texas Parks & Wildlife and “Invasion Biology”

There are even reports from fellow hunters claiming to have seen TPWD officials using the helicopters to herd animals from their land into the park only to mow the entire herd down as soon as the cross the boundary.

Somehow that would not surprise me one little bit.

The following letter was in my inbox this morning. It is self-explanatory. I thought that perhaps some of you guys might be interested in the issues presented, the links provided and might even want to sign the petition. — jtl

Mr. LaBaume,

We have recently constructed a petition regarding a controversial  battle going on between biodiversity advocates and the TPWD, Wildlife education as well as other so called scholars in the wildlife community.  For many years it has become industry standard to demonize “invasive species” such as elk, aoudad and the countless other exotic game animals that call our great state home.  This stems from the unsupported hypothesis based solely on consumption of resources and allegations ranging from the possible spread of disease to abnormal aggression, none of which are supported by any scientific findings whatsoever. So you may ask “What could ill-informed opinions about some animals in the pasture matter?”.

As a result of the popularity of mythical allegations advocated by the “invasion biology “believers many actions have been taken in the name of “invasion biology” . The TPWD has conducted an all-out assault and attempted eradication of many of these species, primarily aoudad, elk and burros. Although no research has ever been conducted to prove these theories THOUSANDS of the animals are killed and injured by these hush-hush slaughters here in Brewster and Presidio counties. There are even reports from fellow hunters claiming to have seen TPWD officials using the helicopters to herd animals from their land into the park only to mow the entire herd down as soon as the cross the boundary.  After this the piles of corpses and ten’s of thousands of pounds of good wild game meat are left to rot in our parks while the not so lucky ones managed to escape with legs blown off, .223 shells in the back of their horns and often fatal injuries that can take day or weeks to finally claim their victim.  That being said one may ask “Well that doesn’t seem very ethical at the least but it’s on state land so how does it effect me?”.

Through my 12 years’ experience as a guide I believe aoudad to be nomadic and elk to have much larger ranges than the confines of the state land. Now that the Chinati Mountain property is expected to open soon the eradication I fear will spread if it hasn’t already (surprising for how transparent our gov typically operates lol).  In short if we find aoudad to be nomadic and elk to travel far outside the park it would in essence mean our tax dollars are being spent to steal potential revenue from our community in an extremely unethical and inhumane fashion.

As you may know the hunting industry in our area brings millions to our community annually. Money that is spent on lodging, food, supplies, ammunition, fuel, vehicles etc. This industry also employs hundreds of locals from professional guides (like myself), taxidermist, cooks,  ranch-hands and many more.  During times of a completive beef industry and rising taxes many small family ranches would have been lost if it weren’t for the income responsible hunting provides. The meat from these hunts is often either taken home to feed families of hunters (100% organic meat at that) , left to be eaten by ranch staff and their families or brought to town and donated and distributed throughout our community. I’m quite sure that if it weren’t for all the meat accessed by hunting many students at Sul Ross would have been forced to survive on ramen noodles for quite some time.

While I’ve done my best to inspire some type of research in the field via the RAS and the BRI, I have failed to do so as of now usually from the lack of funding, interest or possibly out of fear of stepping on a few toes and challenging the status quo.  Recently I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands to a greater extent. I have launched something I’m calling “#SAVETHEAOUDAD”  with a page dedicated to this on our website www.highdesertwma.com, I’ve written a few blog articles also on our website to hopefully bring some awareness and compassion to this cause, started a social media campaign to spread awareness, created a funding inlet through gofundme.com to raise money for the research we need and have started a petition asking the state to cease the practice of these eradications until sufficient research can be conducted.

A Handbook for Ranch ManagersA Handbook for Ranch Managers.  In keeping with the “holistic” idea that the land, the livestock, the people and the money should be viewed as a single integrated whole: Part I deals with the management of the natural resources. Part II covers livestock production and Part III deals with the people and the money. Not only would this book make an excellent basic text for a university program in Ranch Management, no professional ranch manager’s reference bookshelf should be without it. It is a comprehensive reference manual for managing the working ranch. The information in the appendices and extensive bibliography alone is worth the price of the book.

Planned Grazing: A Study Guide and Reference ManualPlanned Grazing: A Study Guide and Reference Manual. This is the ideal squeal to A Handbook for Ranch Managers.  Although the ecological principles remain the same, what was originally known as “The Savory Grazing Method” now answers to a multitude of different names: ranching for profit, holistic management, managed grazing, mob grazing, management intensive grazing, etc. Land & Livestock International, Inc. uses “Restoration Grazing” under its “Managing the Ranch as a Business” program.” No mater what you call it, this summary and synopsis will guide you step by step through the process and teach you how to use it as it was originally intended. No more excuses for failing to complete your grazing plans.

About Land & Livestock Interntional, Inc.

Land and Livestock International, Inc. is a leading agribusiness management firm providing a complete line of services to the range livestock industry. We believe that private property is the foundation of America. Private property and free markets go hand in hand—without property there is no freedom. We also believe that free markets, not government intervention, hold the key to natural resource conservation and environmental preservation. No government bureaucrat can (or will) understand and treat the land with as much respect as its owner. The bureaucrat simply does not have the same motives as does the owner of a capital interest in the property. Our specialty is the working livestock ranch simply because there are so many very good reasons for owning such a property. We provide educational, management and consulting services with a focus on ecologically and financially sustainable land management that will enhance natural processes (water and mineral cycles, energy flow and community dynamics) while enhancing profits and steadily building wealth.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AGRICULTURE, BUT EVENTUALLY IT WILL; THOSE THAT BE ARE USING EVERY EXCUSE IN THE WORLD TO MANIPULATE NATURE, LITTLE DO THEY KNOW OR DO NOT WANT TO REALIZE, THAT EVERYTHING IN THE WILD HAS ALWAYS HAD A WAY OF TAKING CARE OF MATTERS. IF IT WERE NOT FOR HUNTERS, THERE WOULD BE MORE DISEASE AMONG NATURE, AND THERE WOULD BE MORE COMPETITION IN THE WILDLIFE COMMUNITY FOR SPACE. TAKE A LOOK WHAT NEXT IS ABOUT TO HIT THE HUMAN RACE, THIS TIME WE ARE THE FARMED ONES, AND HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS WHAT IS NEXT:
